At the age of 15 he left school to start work at T W Greenwell dry dock, based at the mouth of the River Wear, as an apprentice engineer where he worked for 36 years until it closed in the mid 70's.

Ken took up running at the age of 60 and has completed three London marathons. He has run six marathons in all and was awarded a Quill certificate by his local newspaper, the Sunderland Echo, for his efforts in raising money for charity.

At the age of 78 he enrolled at Bede College Sunderland to learn how to use a computer, gaining his ECDL certificate at the age of 80.

It was not until the age of 80 that he decided to take up writing, and he has written several children's stories which the children at the local primary school where he lives, have thoroughly enjoyed reading.
